Letters From A | 02: Mornings & Chronotypes

Hello, Mabuhay, good morning! Been a while! I just finished having breakfast a.k.a a thing I haven’t done for almost a month now. I guess that’s what being unemployed does to most people, ‘no? Have long hours of sleep and stay up late as much as they want?

… Well, at least for me it’s like that. Haha

My sleeping schedule has been really messed up since Mom & my younger brother, Raive, left for PH. I sleep so late no matter how hard I try that I’ll consider myself lucky if I get to sleep before 3 am. The latest I have slept is around 6:30 am yata. As I’ve said, this is the first time in three weeks that I have woken up earlier than 1 pm; only because I fell asleep around 10 last night, which is also a first. (I was too full from dinner. Lol)

Anyway, I woke up 5 am earlier and I wasn’t able to sleep anymore, so after scrolling online and trying to force myself to sleep for around 2 hours, I got up and decided to buy breakfast from the nearest Pinoy bakery nearby.

It was 19° Celsius but surprisingly, I enjoyed my 5-minute walk going there. I had to walk through a park and that’s when I realized that it’s been so long since I had the chance to observe things like these: women circling the park in their abayas, an old couple playing badminton with – I assume – their grandchildren watching, and dads sitting on benches with their kids in stroller next to them.

I wanted to write something deep like, “it’s really different when you start to see things in a different perspective” or “mornings are beautiful I hope everyone gets to experience that kind of peace,” but who am I kidding? The truth is nothing has changed, mornings are always beautiful, and it’s just me who needs to wake up early to see this kind of thing.

But sis… I just can’t. 😅

I am never a morning person and I don’t think I ever will be no matter how beautiful mornings are. Who knows, maybe there’s someone out there who’s a morning person and will cook bacon and egg for me – hopefully served with a hot choco on the side – and one day I’ll also be one, but for now, it’s obvious that mornings are a no for me.

I’d like to blame it on my chronotype, something I have learned from Ate Bianca yesterday, and it is said to be our body’s biological clock. To quote Dr. Breus, a sleep expert:

“It is a classification of when your genetic propensity is meant to sleep. It’s determined by the PER3 gene. And it influences more than just sleep. It also plays a role under categories like health, food, work, money, relationship, et al.”

You can read more about it here, but to summarize, it’s not your fault if you can’t force yourself to be a morning person or a nightshift kind of person. It’s in your genes and here are its four different types.

  • Dolphins: light sleepers and tend to wake up at the slightest noise
  • Lions: naturally wake up early (the morning people)
  • Bears: most common and have an energy cycle that rises and falls with the sun
  • Wolves: naturally stay up later and sleep later. they’re just starting to drift off when the lions are waking up (the night owls)

Obviously, I fall under the category wolves but I feel like I’m close to being a dolphin as well. Ate Bianca said that there are also types of “hybrid” but I have yet to research for that.

Knowing now that I’m a wolf, it is said that my peak productivity happens in the middle of the day and I can do other stuff in mid-afternoons which I find really true. In fact, it’s now 12 noon and I can’t help myself from writing this post. I even started doing laundry, halfway this. I also noticed that when I was still working out, I liked going to the gym by mid-afternoon or early evenings.

I think that’s the main purpose of knowing what your chronotype is. If you know what it is, you can base your daily activities and schedules from there, knowing which time of day you’re most productive. You can finally stop asking yourself how others can be so productive in the morning while there you are, staring at your screen, your mind left frozen at home. Take the quiz and let me know which category you fall into.

I’ll just be here enjoying the Arroz Caldo and Spanish bread I bought earlier because the “someone” who’s gonna cook bacon and egg for me is probably at work right now. Naks! Have a great weekend everyone! Catch up soon.

Love, Amielle

  2. It says I’m a dolphin, but I think I’m a wolf. Maybe I’m a hybrid. That’s it! This post convinced me to find out more. I just have to know if I’m a dolphin or wolf or both or I won’t be able to sleep tonight 😂😂😂

  4. I’m definitely a wolf! Working graveyard for 1 and half decade is the proof of that. Hahah.. Mas nakakapag isip ako ng mahusay kapag gabi. No wonder I compose my blog kapag hatinggabi na at tulog na ang mga tao sa bahay. Heheh..

  6. I love this. I learned that I’m more of a bear though I usually wake up around 6 am and sleep around 10pm which is still mostly like the bear. Though I don’t really exercise hahaha. I hope you sleep better some time soon though 😊
